Fort Harrison Real Estate Fort Harrison Homes for Sale

Fort Harrison, Indiana

Lawrence Indiana is located in the Northeast quadrant of Indianapolis. Residential real estate here offers a wide variety of homes, condos, and lifestyles.  Just 20 minutes from the Indianapolis airport and close to all the interstate roads that cross Indianapolis (I-69, I-70, I-65, and I-74).  Lawrence is one of the “Excluded Cities” in Marion County/Indianapolis that is allowed to retain a city government, but also residents are included to vote for the Indianapolis Mayor and have representation on the Indianapolis/Marion City-county council. As of July 2007, the current population is 40,795.

The Lawrence Township School District is ranked 7th largest in the nation.  The school district consists of 11 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, an Alternative school and an Early Learning Center.  The local government established the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township

Part of the Lawrence area has homes and real estate located on Geist Lake.  Geist Lake is an 1800 acre reservoir surrounded by neighborhoods and homes.  Many have personal boat docks and others offering water access. There are also two public boat ramps. It is a great place for sailing, skiing, boating and fishing.  Lawrence and the Northeast side of Indianapolis offer both affordable housing as well as luxury water front homes.

Another major part of Lawrence has a rich history in Fort Benjamin Harrison.  Fort “Ben” was established in 1902 as a training facility for the Army and was active for two World Wars, the Cold War, Vietnam War, and other U.S. actions.  In the 1950’s the now named Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS, it was originally named the Army Finance and Accounting Service, AFAS) finance center opened and is still the largest employer for Lawrence. In 1990 the fort was decommissioned and had a major impact to the area especially in real estate.  Many of the buildings were remodeled and taken over by new businesses.  The existing old army living quarters were also remodeled and are now very popular in the residential real estate market.

The new homes and new businesses turned the Lawrence area into a highly sought after area of Indianapolis.  The local government also converted existing wooded and open area into an extremely nice park and established the Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park. This beautiful state park offers hiking, horseback trails, golf and dining at the former Officer’s Club.

The former Fort Ben part of Lawrence offers a lot of different lifestyles in housing. There are homes and condos that date back to 1902 that have been beautifully rehabbed such as Lawton Loop and Sergeants Row to new construction. Lawrence is a charming place to work and live.
